A classic topic for me.

When Leofinance announced their new plans for sharing their ad revenue it brought a tangible sense of excitement to the community.

Finally something that we had talked about for a long, long time. Monetizing our content with external revenue.

The original post form the team is here.

LeoAds revenue sharing.

I would recommend reading the full post but the summary goes a little like this.

  • New distribution model for Ad revenue.
  • Take this monthly revenue and buy LEO from markets.
  • Distribute this as staked LEO to all wallets with existing staked LEO.
  • Estimated at 4%-10% APR on your stake at current levels.
  • Expectation to move this target higher over time.

So in summary:

By helping to grow the Leofinance traffic and ad revenue you are actually increasing your own earnings which will then be paid into your wallet every month in the form of interest payments.

Would this work for Hive?

Absolutely it would.

At the moment leofinance is ranked at 109723 according to the alexa rankings with a revenue of roughly $4K a month from ads.

This seems small but it will grow exponentially over time as we populate out the content. When this change goes live we will star to see extra LEO drip feed into our accounts based on our LEO holdings.

This is a real form of external revenue that is coming into our eco-system and will add value to all of our holdings. It's a huge change. The ads are small and unobtrusive. The team could even do a bit more with these to increase the revenue but it doesn't take away form the experience at all.

Now if the team behind peakd were to do the same. Either by introducing their own ad based token for the users who publish through their platform, maybe based on page views generated by your content or just keep dropping hive to all stakeholders on the chain as the ad revenue buys form the markets.

This changes the game. According to Alexa the website is ranked at 20223. Lets just say that the site could generate 20K a month from ads to keep it simple. At these prices your looking at 40K hive, bought from the markets and distributed back to the hive community. Some people would say that this is small money but that is where it starts. Like with any business when you see the money coming in, then you keep growing to make more of it. That 20K could become 100K a month very fast if people step up their game and share more hive content with the world.

Ideally there would be PEAK token distributed daily based on how many page views were brought to the site that day.

Holders of this token on the chain would be dropped their share of the ad revenue every week based on how many views their content generated.

Now the Hive community has a brand new game to play. Bring views to the website to get rewarded.

It would turn the whole content creation side of the chain on it's head.

Now we have a chance to earn evergreen rewards.

  • Now there is an added incentive to create quality content.

  • Now there is an incentive to share your content externally and gain views form other sites.

  • Now there is a chance for new accounts to earn from day 1 without begging for votes.

  • Now it is worthwhile for established content creators to join hive and bring their audience with them.

  • Now SEO becomes a factor in our content.

  • Now we have consistent buying pressure on the token form an external source.

I know that some people and devs don't like ads but revenue is a big part of business. If I could build my own site then I would but unfortunately that's not in my skill set and never will be. We have smarter people here for that and hopefully some day we will see hundreds of Hive based apps doing something similar and putting a huge buying pressure on the token. I do keep bringing up the subject and hope that someday the likes of @asgarth or @jarvie would think that some form of ad revenue would be of benefit to the community.

Content is our greatest asset but we have never utilized it for the users benefit yet. That is why I am so excited about the Leo ad share scheme that has all of the users upping their game to help bring in more money for the whole community.

Something to think about and have the conversation.
