Would it be better to have a single GIG or a series of 3 or 5 articles per author over a month?

I think a single gig would be good to start. Some may not want to commit to that many articles and you could always ask them back if you liked their work and they were agreeable.

I think all the ideas you mentioned in the post are worth exploring.
