Retrospectively Reviewing & Reviving my Hair Business
In an earlier post, I talked about having a passion for hairstyling and creating unique hairstyles in general. This passion eventually turned into a business while I was back in university.
The Rebranding After University, the business was rebranded to cater to the needs of not just students but a larger target market outside school.
Within this time, I introduced new hairstyles and they were named based on the inspiration that birthed them.
I did not have enough funds to open a physical location such as a salon or a store for hair products, so I worked from home.
*Getting Support As orders exponentially grew, I realized I could no longer do it on my own and I required extra hands to support me in the business.
So I went in search.
At the time, I did not have enough funds to sustainably pay salaries for 6-months. I could manage to scale through the first 2-months but may struggle if sales dwindle.
So I decided to look into a more sustainable solution for staffing and getting the labour support I needed.
*Exchange of Values I looked for candidates that had an interest in practically learning about hair making.
I offered to train and teach them my hairstyle techniques for free in exchange for having them work with me according to a structured schedule.
As a way of compensating them for their time regardless, I offered them meals, transportation, and a monthly stipend.
*A Crossroad Everything worked out well as I got two dedicated staff that were awaiting admission into school at the time and were a total blessing.
On the other hand, I was also awaiting my posting for the National youth service during this period.
This posting came out and I had to relocate temporarily to where I was posted to serve my country.
I had to suspend my hair business as it was a bit tough to manage it while I was away.
*The Revival? In recent times, as a way of having additional streams of income, I have pondered about what it would take to revive my hair business that was once a viable source of income.
It indeed does not take an arm or a leg but it requires some form of capital to purchase the materials required to jumpstart the business afresh.
*Truth is, where there is a will, there is a way.
Hopefully, with Hive and continuous progress being made here, part of my goals for 2022 is to revive my hair business and I believe it is possible.
Thank you for your precious time!
