Despite a mini pullback yesterday Bitcoin came back strong today bursting through $58,000 in the last few hours to yet another ATH.

Is a $60K BTC on the cards this week?

Today's This Day in Crypto History is special as it is the first community contributed day. Thank you to @johnspalding for both the entries for 21 February - you saved this day !

21 February 2018 - Exchange Operator Arrested for lying about 6000 Bitcoin Hack

Jon E Montroll (aka Ukyo) operated two bitcoin services, Weexchange which functioned as a bitcoin depository and currency exchange service, and Bitfunder which facilitated the purchase and trading of shares of businesses that listed on the platform.

In 2013 hackers managed to steal over 6,000 Bitcoin from Weexchange. As a result of this loss Montroll's two businesses did not have enough BTC to cover the amount they owed. Montroll lied to both investors and investigators to hide this deficit.

On 21 February 2018 Montroll was taken into custody by the FBI for giving false sworn testimony and false documentation to the Securities Exchange Commission (SEC).

Montroll was subsequently found guilty and sentenced to 14 months of imprisonment and 3 years of supervised release.

21 February 2019 - Zcash Company rebrands as the Electric Coin Company (ECC)

Zcash is a cryptocurrency that uses cryptography to provide enhanced privacy for users compared to other cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin.

Development on ZCash was started in 2013 by Johns Hopkins University professor Matthew Green. The development was completed by the for-profit Zcash Company, led by Zooko Wilcox. Zcash was first mined in October 2016.

In March 2018 a critical bug was found in the ZCash code but it was not fixed until October.

In February 2019 it was announced that the Zcash Company was being rebranded as the Electric Coin Company (ECC). The coin that ECC supported continued to be known as Zcash.

Help the Project and earn HIVE

If you would like to help this Crypto History project I am always looking for contributions from the community.

I pay 1 HIVE for every suitable verifiable event that I use in a future 'This Day In Crypto History' post.

The empty days coming up that I am particularly keen to get entries for are...

  • February 26th & 29th (!)

  • March 2nd, 4th, 5th & 7th

As the 26th is getting close I am doubling up the reward to 2 HIVE for any events for that day.

If anyone does find an event for 29 February I will 4x the reward to 4 HIVE.

Events will have to be notable enough, with links to reputable websites for verification. Events can be posted in comments below or sent to me on Discord (Pennsif#9921).

My thanks again to @johnspalding for making 21 February possible!

Looking forward to more contributions from the community.
