I woke up this morning at 5am again.

This is a pretty common occurrence during a bull run. It seems like the excitement and nerve jangling of trading can take its tole on the circadian rhythm 😂

What do I do when the anti-sandman comes calling? Probably the worst thing I could, I pick up my phone and start scrolling through crypto twitter and checking my holdings on blockfolio.

This morning's twilight hours were different though, as I was greeted by some pretty obnoxious signals on blockfolio.

As I read it became obvious that hackers were having their merry way with the popular crypto App.

A notifications popped up with a racist announcement, seemingly from Binance, about the crypto exchange closing services for black people. The signal has since been deleted but you can see an example below of a similar signal someone else received that they tweeted to notify blockfolio (offensive language redacted). The signal I saw was almost exactly the same wording but using the Binance signal header.

This type of thing really does my head in to be honest. Why should a whole group of human beings on earth wake up to read this type of BS just to fulfill a hacker group's disruptive agenda.

Also, from a purely selfish perspective I worried that a hack on blockfolio could mean hackers now have everyone's portfolio information, holding amounts and possibly exchange information!

So I quickly dived onto twitter to investigate and found this information which reassured me a little.

In a recent tweet the FTX-owned crypto portfolio tracking app has said it's looking into the issue, that user funds are safe, and trading services are working fine.

Chairman of Blockfolio Sam Bankman-Fried said - the hack was on the news/signal feeds of Blockfolio only, and other services remain intact.

The crypto portfolio tracking app has also announced they will be conducting a security review of the old, non-trading-related parts of Blockfolio to bring them in line with industry standards.

So it seems that key information is safe, including API keys for those who've linked their exchanges to blockfolio's tracking services. At the time of writing this article the tracking app displays and the price feed has just started to track again.

As this hack is relatively recent I shall be keeping a close eye on incoming updates from blockfolio and will be considering alternative tracking apps as a contingency plan.

One thing is certain, as the bull run continues and more eyes return to the cryptocurrency space hacks will become more common.

Always keep long term holdings of digital assets on a secure offline wallet to stay safe.

Thanks for reading.
