Buying those new shoes, that new headphone from Sony, or maybe your 3rd restaurant meal of the week because you're too lazy to cook at home. These are all tempting things to do in this day and age, especially when you have some finances to spare. Modern day consumerism is getting harder to resist. But sometimes you just have to look in your reflection in the store window and say "no, not today!".

Being mindful of what you do with your money is a fairly important part of becoming financially independent. This is how you save. And with those savings you can then invest, which in return will bring you more freedom eventually. I know it's not always as easy to not be tempted. I don't even remember how many times I walked past a cute stuffed animal in a store and thought "hey, that would look really nice in my home". Luckily I could resist, else I'd have at least 12 extra plush and fluffy roommates right now. Instead I have just one. Meet Jacobus:

But enough about my almost obsession with stuffed animals. The point is that you need to be mindful of your finances. At the very least some self-awareness is a good start to do this. That doesn't mean you can't have fun at all of course. It just means you need to know the right time and right place. For example, when I'm on the go, I refuse to by overpriced drinks from vending machines. Instead, I know where all the supermarkets are that sell me the same drinks at retail price, so I go to those. But when I decide to enjoy myself at a good restaurant, I then don't mind buying a drink for the same price as with the vending machine, because then it's another setting and something I choose to do at that moment.

With these little logical gymnastics one can exercise better control over financial decisions and become financially responsible and inevitably independent.
