New Reward Cards are on their way. 43 New Soul Bound Reward cards to be exact. What does Soul Bound mean? Simply put Soul Bound refers to items that can't be transferred out of ones account. Which for Splinterlands and these new Sound Bound cards means these specific cards will not be able to be transferred, rented/delegated or burned while they are still in print. However the Splinterlands team has decided to unbind Soul Bound Reward Cards once their print has completed. These new cards are planned to be release on Tuesday, January 31st, 2023 at which time the old Reward cards will stop being minted.

Many other changes are coming with the introduction of Soul Bound cards. Some of those changes I will list in bullet point form below but for a full breakdown on everything that is to come I would suggest visiting the official Splinterlands announcement post in which can be found by clicking the following link:

Other Changes/ Important Notes

  • The option for players to use Legendary and Alchemy potions to increase their chances of getting better rarity and gold foil reward cards when opening loot chests will be re-enabled

  • Loot Chest Only: Legendary potions used for opening loot chests will now also double the chances of receiving Epic rarity cards as well as Legendary rarity cards

  • A single loot chest may now contain multiple of the same reward card

  • Legendary and/or Alchemy potion charges will only be used when opening a loot chest that is randomly determined to contain reward cards, and only one charge will be used per chest.

  • The determination of rarity and foil for reward cards received from loot chests will happen before* the quantity of the card in the chest is determined

  • Once out of print these new Soul Bound reward cards can be unbound by staking DEC into the cards. A portion of that staked DEC can be reclaimed later by burning such cards

Card Stats

  • 37 Monster cards
  • 6 Summoner cards (one from each element except Neutral)
  • 12 Legendary cards (two from each basic element, one Dragon, and one Neutral)
  • 7 Epic cards (one from each element)
  • 12 Rare cards (two from each basic element, one Dragon, and one Neutral)
  • 12 Common cards (two from each basic element and two Neutral)

RentMoney's Thoughts:

I'm not a big fan of Soul Bound but at this time in our dipping market I think it makes allot of sense to go this route. What I don't like is how the unbinding process works. I absolutely want Reward Cards to have the options of being unbinded but allowing them to do so at the end of each mint might put us right back in the same position we currently are in a year or two from now. I say almost because the Splinterlands team did toss in the DEC staking requirements for unbinding. The amount of DEC it cost vs. the USD value of each card will determine the speed in which these cards become transferable and hit the markets. I would have liked to have seen Vouchers being used here for unbinding and not just at the end of mint. I think Vouchers to unbind cards at any point would have been the play here. However the Splinterlands team hasn't let us down yet and I have no reason to doubt them this time. Our Splinterlands assets might be dipping but they are still well above cost price. The only exception being items that are still in print and historically that is always been the case. One can't expect to purchase something (everything) and turn an immediate profit. Lets hear your thoughts on these upcoming changes below in the comment section.
