Witnesses, also known as block-producers, are pretty much the folks that make HIVE possible. Every transaction made on HIVE is stored on their computer servers (nodes). These nodes are either owned or rented by the witnesses and are located all over the world.

Collectively these nodes are called the HIVE blockchain ledger (like a diary of everything that happens on HIVE but located on a number of different nodes).

Witnesses are also the elected governors of HIVE. The top 21 witnesses (number 21 is a tie-breaker) influence the developmental direction of the blockchain and its economics. Every HIVE account, great or small, is eligible to vote for a maximum of 30 witnesses.
