Cupones de descuento = Ahorro hormiga [ESP-ENG]

Hello, how are you? The publication that I bring you this time I wanted to share it here in the Leo Finance community because it is about personal finance, business and saving methods.

El día de ayer visité un centro comercial de la ciudad de Bogotá y justo en la entrada el vigilante me entregó una hoja llena de cupones de descuento para utilizar en distintas tiendas del centro comercial (negocios de comida rápida, cafés, tiendas de regalos, peluquería, tiendas de colchones, autos, entre otras). Acá son muy comunes las promociones en distintos momentos del año, desde el Blue Monday en enero, hasta el día sin IVA para el último trimestre del año, sin embargo, no veo con tanta frecuencia cupones de descuento, sino mayormente promociones o rebajas en las tiendas.

Yesterday I visited a shopping mall in the city of Bogota and right at the entrance the security guard handed me a sheet full of discount coupons to use in different stores in the mall (fast food stores, cafes, gift stores, hairdressers, mattress stores, cars, among others). Promotions are very common here at different times of the year, from Blue Monday in January, to the VAT-free day for the last quarter of the year, however, I don't see discount coupons so often, but mostly promotions or sales in the stores.

En la parte de adelante del volante que me entregaron se observa el nombre de los locales, la cantidad en pesos del descuento o el porcentaje, y en la parte de atrás se pueden leer las condiciones de compra. Miré todas las opciones para ver si realmente necesitaba o quería algo de lo que allí ofrecían. Como he comentado antes en esta comunidad, no es buena idea comprar algo solo porque sí (aunque no lo necesites) o solo porque está en descuento o en promoción. Con ese hábito dejamos de ahorrar dinero que a la larga podría funcionar para otra cosa.

On the front of the flyer you can see the name of the stores, the amount of the discount in colombian pesos or the percentage, and on the back you can read the conditions of purchase. I looked at all the options to see if I really needed or wanted something from what they offered there. As I have commented before in this community, it is not a good idea to buy something just because (even if you don't need it) or just because it is on discount or promotion. With that habit we stop saving money that in the long run could work for something else.

Así pues, la visita a este centro comercial coincidió con la hora de la tarde en la que provoca merendar con algo dulce, entonces decidimos utilizar uno de los cupones para merendar. Las donas de Dunkin&Donuts son mis favoritas pero el descuento aplicaba en un combo con café que realmente no quería, entonces vimos la opción de los helados "Popsy", una heladería que no habíamos probado antes. Pedimos un "Charlie Brownie" que en días normales cuesta 11.400 pesos colombianos (2.89$) pero con el descuento del 25% quedó en 8.550 pesos (2.16$). Es decir, el ahorro fue de 2.850 pesos (0.72 dólares)

So, the visit to this mall coincided with the time in the afternoon when it triggers snacking on something sweet, so we decided to use one of the coupons for snacking. Dunkin&Donuts donuts are my favorite but the discount applied to a combo with coffee that I really didn't want, so we looked at the option of "Popsy" ice cream, an ice cream parlor we had not tried before. We ordered a "Charlie Brownie" which on normal days costs 11,400 Colombian pesos ($2.89) but with the 25% discount it was 8,550 pesos ($2.16). In other words, the savings was 2,850 pesos ($0.72).

¿Consideras que es un descuento pequeño o grande? El postre que pedimos tenía 2 sabores de helados, crema chantilly, cereza y 4 porciones pequeñas de brownie. Aquí se los muestro:

Comparando el precio y el tamaño de este postre con dulces que se consiguen en otros negocios me parece que estuvo bien aprovechar el descuento para probarlo :) pero no sé si lo compraría en el futuro sin descuento. De todos modos los sabores de helados que escogimos estuvieron muy buenos (Oreo y Snickers), así que estuve contenta con mi compra :)

Comparing the price and size of this dessert with desserts available in other stores I think it was good to take the discount to try it :) but I don't know if I would buy it in the future without the discount. Anyway the ice cream flavors we chose were very good (Oreo and Snickers), so I was happy with my purchase :)

Más tarde, en casa, me di cuenta de que una peluquería ofrecía descuentos en Corte de cabello, cepillado y manicure. Desde hace 6 meses no cortaba mi cabello, así que me pareció un buen momento para hacerlo. Sin embargo, lo primero que hice fue escribir a la cuenta de instagram de la peluquería preguntando el costo de los servicios, para hacerme una idea de en cuánto me quedaría con el descuento y también compararlo con los precios de otras peluquerías (Quería que el descuento fuera significativo para mi, ya les he comentado que analizo con cuidado mis compras)

Later, at home, I noticed that a hair salon was offering discounts on Haircut, brushing and manicure. I hadn't cut my hair in 6 months, so it seemed like a good time to do it. However, the first thing I did was to write to the salon's instagram account asking the cost of the services, to get an idea of how much I would get with the discount and also compare it with the prices of other salons (I wanted the discount to be significant for me, I have already told you that I carefully analyze my purchases).

En la peluquería confirmé lo que me habían indicado por instagram. El corte de cabello cuesta normalmente 22.000 pesos (5.57$) , pero menos el descuento de 10.000 pesos quedó en 12.000 pesos colombianos (3.04$) . El cepillado cuesta 22.000 pesos (5.57), y con el descuento de 8.000 pesos colombianos terminé pagando 14.000 pesos (3.55 $). Sin duda, en la peluquería el ahorro fue más significativo que con el postre, siendo el ahorro en total de 4.55 dólares o 18.000 pesos colombianos.

At the hair salon I confirmed what they had indicated to me on instagram. The haircut normally costs 22,000 pesos ($5.57$) , but minus the 10,000 pesos discount it came to 12,000 Colombian pesos ($3.04$) . The brushing cost 22,000 pesos (5.57), and with the 8,000 Colombian peso discount I ended up paying 14,000 pesos ($3.55). Undoubtedly, at the hair salon the savings was more significant than with the dessert, the total savings being $4.55 or 18,000 Colombian pesos.

Probablemente la ganancia mayor fue haber conocido esta nueva peluquería, en la cual la atención fue muy buena y el resultado excepcional. Sin duda regresaré aunque no hayan descuentos, y creo que esa es la ganancia mayor para el local. Lo que los dueños de las tiendas pretenden al promover cupones de descuento es captar nuevos clientes o conseguir más ventas. Ellos lo lograron conmigo, y esto también es un punto interesante de las finanzas y el área de marketing para resaltar.

Probably the biggest gain was to have known this new hairdresser, in which the attention was very good and the result was exceptional. I will definitely come back even if there are no discounts, and I think that is the biggest gain for the salon. What the owners of the stores intend to do by promoting discount coupons is to attract new customers or get more sales. They did it with me, and this is also an interesting point for finance and marketing to highlight.

Ayer y hoy hice cosas que igualmente quería hacer (ir por un postre de domingo en la tarde y arreglar mi cabello) pero utilizando tres cupones de descuento. De esta forma ahorré un total de 5.27 dólares en dos días. Es decir, con el ahorro obtenido puedo regresar a la peluquería por otro corte de cabello, puedo pedir dos postres en Popsy o simplemente puedo ahorrar ese dinero.

Yesterday and today I did things I likewise wanted to do (go for a Sunday afternoon dessert and get my hair done) but using three discount coupons. This way I saved a total of $5.27 in two days. In other words, with the savings I can go back to the salon for another haircut, I can order two desserts at Popsy's or I can just save that money.

5.27 dólares... ¿Es mucho? ¿Es poco? Me gustaría saber su opinión en los comentarios! Así como existen "gastos hormigas" (pequeños gastos diarios que a la larga suman una buena suma de dinero), también existen ahorros hormiga, y este fue uno para mí. Por eso me gustan tanto los cupones de descuento :)

5.27 dollars... Is that a lot?, is that not enough? I'd love to read your thoughts in the comments! Just as there are "ant expenses" (small daily expenses that add up to a nice sum of money in the long run), there are also ant savings, and this was one for me. That's why I love discount coupons so much :)
