A recent topic of discussion in Brazilian social circles is related to the recent news that shows that the government expenses with food over R$ 1,8 billion (roughly 330 million USD), which is 20% higher than what it was in 2019.

Among the list of purchases, some items draw a lot of attention, such as chewing gum, which accounts for more than R$ 2 million (over 370 thousand USD), and seafood, which accounts for about R$ 6 million (a little over a million dollars).

The minister of economy stated that all purchases were within the government's budget which, in my opinion, makes it even worse. I don't mean to attack one side or another of the current political spectrum that we have right now in Brazil but it doesn't look good for a country that's really struggling with the current economical scenario to plan it's expenses like that.

The president's approval dropped to 26%, after the biggest fall registered in a week since he took office. With greater concerns on his plate, such as a major health crisis all over the country, this might be overlooked, but it can be seen as another sign of the inability of the government to handle the country in a time of need.
