That's indeed how the system works, all unused votes are redistributed to active shareholders so you know they go to people who put effort into their work and are in it for the longer run. You invested hive remains yours in the meantime and there are the occasional curation / airdrop payouts. If you ever get to a point where you obtain a more regular posting style, the upvotes will be there and they will give a return which has gone up quite a bit since the early days.
