"Debt collectors can text, email and message you on social media now"

According to this article on CNBC

Debt Collectors on Social Media

"Debt collectors can text, email and message you on social media now"

Why do I think this is a terrible idea?

A few reasons:

1. How do they verify the identity of the account? Most accounts are avatars with nonsense names. Even if someone uses a real name , there are many people with the same name so how would a debt collector know it was the correct "John Smith" for instance? Also, many photos are stolen and used for social media sites so visual confirmation is no guarantee either. Then you have people who never made a Social Media site but somebody else has made one and is impersonating them.

So, lets say for instance a debt collector send a message on a Social Media site to the wrong "John Smith". This debt collector is disclosing private financial information to a total stranger.

2. This will encourage even more spying and data scrapping on Social Media Sites.

3. This will encourage even more spoof emails and will lead to even more unnecessary stolen money & identity theft

4. No clear safe way to Opt Out. Would you trust a suspicious Debt Collection link in your Social Media Messages?

More & More terrible Legislation continues to flow down the sewage Pipeline to the very same people these idiot Government Officials are elected to "Protect"

What do you think? Is this a good or bad idea? Obviously I am against this but am open to hearing arguments for this type of behavior if you can think of any. It's setting a bad precedent for evermore intrusion.

What else could go wrong by legalizing this type of harassment ?
