Facebook Class Action 2020 BIPA Illinois Lawsuit Overview

. Facebook has over 2.7 billion monthly users and recently had a major lawsuit filed against them, ironically, initiated in my hometown of Chicago, Illinois.

“Mr. Reid it is out of sheer morbid curiosity I’m allowing this freak show to continue.” - Liar Liar, 1997

Users in Illinois found some unethical business tactics being used by Facebook between 2011 and 2020. As a result of these findings, Facebook paid off some of these users because of the unethical tactics that were being used.

So, one of my friends actually told me about this Facebook biometric data claim settlement; how facebook came across this major lawsuit with some of their users.

I immediately started asking him questions like *“How did you get money from Facebook..?”

*“Your honor, I object! What does this have to do with anything? Overruled. Mrs. Cole, answer the question.” - Liar Liar, 1997

The first question I asked was: *"How did you find out about this? How did you hear about it?"

I personally know a lot of people who said they got a notification saying that they could apply for it. I did not get the notification, but I don't really go on Facebook too often.

I asked my friend how he found out about it and he said he actually got a letter in the mail saying that he could join in on the lawsuit and make some money. It was from a class action lawsuit type thing. They send out letters to people that they think could have been affected so that way they could get more money from Facebook or whatever company they're filing it against. My friend then read some articles online to make sure it was legit and that's how he said he found out about it.

So, if you guys want to know more about it make sure you go check it out online or just keep reading because you're going to learn everything you need to know in this post.

So, my next question to my friend was: *“What is this lawsuit claim all about? What does it entail?"

He said that residents of Illinois filed a lawsuit against Facebook for the illegal collection and storage of biometric data without proper user consent.

*“Now, let me get this straight that would mean…” - Liar Liar, 1997

I didn’t 100% know what all of that meant, but I’ll break it down for all of you guys who are in my boat.

I had to ask you a few more questions, such as: *“What does illegal collection and storage of biometric data mean?”

He said it is illegal collection and storage of biometric data, meaning Facebook was collecting and storing facial recognition templates. That’s what people in Illinois were upset about; being automatically tagged in photos that were posted by other users.

*“And the truth shall set you free!” - Liar Liar, 1997

So, my next question was: *“When applying for the settlement, what did you have to do? Did it take forever? Did you have to give a bunch of information to some sketchy website?”

He basically said that all you need to do is just prove that you had a Facebook account between 2011 and 2020 and I’m pretty sure there's a lot of people out there that had Facebook accounts between that time...

So, pretty much all you have to do is just prove that you had an account between those dates and you're good; you're eligible. The expected payouts were anywhere from $200 to $400 for the settlement depending on how many people signed up for it.

*“This contract is void!” - Liar Liar, 1997

So, my friend said that all he had to do was go on fill out a few pages saying that he had a Facebook account between 2011 and 2020 and then they just deposited that check into his bank account. Facebook paid him off.

*“Jordan fades back... Swoosh! And that's the game!” - Liar Liar, 1997

Online Security Tips How To Protect Yourself

Now we're going to talk about how to protect yourself and online privacy so your information isn't being collected and stored without your consent moving forward in 2021 and beyond.

So, there are three things that I do there.

#1 - How To Fully Secure Your Facebook Account In 2021 (Facebook Security Settings 2021)

First of all, there are the settings on the Facebook website. We can go in there, edit our profile, our privacy settings and you’re going to want to thoroughly go through those settings.

You simply have to read through the options, see if that kind of information is something you would want to be shared, and toggle it on or off. You guys can go through the Facebook privacy and security settings, you can even turn on two-factor authentication so that way whenever there's a new login to your Facebook, it sends you a text so that way you have to type in the code in order to log in. Little extra security there.

#2 - How To Protect Yourself Using a Secure Browser (Online Privacy)

Now, some people might think: “Oh, Google Chrome? Google Chrome is the best!”

Do you know what I mean? Some people just love Google Chrome. I know I was there - loved Google Chrome - big chrome user... BUT, that all changed when I found out that they're just collecting all of the data that you use on their browser and selling it to advertisers. If you go in the Chrome settings, you probably have cookies stored on you, websites are tracking you, and chances are you see a bunch of ads while using chrome unless you have an ad blocker.

You don't want any of that and it actually slows down your browser so if you're searching up stuff on the internet it's going to make your browser and your loading time much slower. On top of that, you're going to have to see all these ugly ads. On youtube, you're going to have to wait five seconds to a minute in order to skip to the content you actually want to see.

How I avoid all of that and avoid my data being collected, sold, and traced by advertisers, websites I go to, etc. - I use a browser called Brave Browser and it's actually run on a cryptocurrency platform so, that's pretty awesome. That means you have an opportunity to make money by just using the browser. Plus, the advanced browser blocks all tracers blocks all ads, cookies, fingerprinting and it keeps you really secure online.

So, that's the second way of staying as secure as possible: using Brave Browser because it keeps you very secure, keeps all of your data on lock, and it has a very secure password keychain in there too so you can store all of your passwords without worrying that google has it or any of these other websites you visit.

Yeah, that's Brave browser, totally free to use. You can download Brave at www.brave.com.

#3 - Final Online Security Tips: How To Protect Yourself Using a Virtual Private Network (VPN)

The last and final thing to keep you as secure as possible when you're online is using a virtual private server or a VPN. I've seen Casey Neistat talk about this and a lot of other big YouTubers these days are talking about VPNs because security online is so important.

There is a lot of crazy things an online predator can do with private networking information, such as your IP address. That topic is for another post, but to be short, people can find pretty much all details about you and go much further than just “knowing” about your sensitive information.

So yeah, that's why I use a VPN and I highly encourage you guys to use a VPN. My favorite VPN is called NordVPN and I’ll link that here for you because everyone who uses that link, you're going to be helping out my channel. For the person who is planning to grab NordVPN, I appreciate you because that helps me make more videos and cool content in the future; upgrade this quality of content for you guys.

That actually leads me to my next point here…
