Kimchi is a typical Korean food that is based on a fermented vegetable to accompany other dishes, in recent times it has become fashionable for its healthy properties as a probiotic food, up to that point the real definition.

The name of this food has been taken by analysts, financial advisers and banks in general to define an additional premium that determines a difference in the prices of crypto assets between exchanges in South Korea and foreign ones. In bitcoin, for example, prices are notably higher in that country compared to other nations, even among Asians.

Although that rate may vary, at the moment it is 15%, which is why bitcoin costs in South Korea almost 70,000 dollars compared to the 59,000 that are set by the most important exchanges in the world. The Kimchi premium increases when an upward trend appears and speculators in that country promote the "fear of being left out of something" or "Fear Of Missing Out" known worldwide by its acronym FOMO.

The reality is that the intervention of the South Korean state to support its currency means that there are strict limits and therefore lack of liquidity, that translates into this additional premium that, as I said, can reach up to 15% of the value of the cryptocurrency that is intended to acquire.

Perhaps many reading this think of selling their bitcoins in the South Korean market at a considerably higher value than they would get in exchanges in other parts of the world, but it will not be possible because regulations determined by the government prohibit foreign clients from operating on exchanges Koreans.

However, this value caused by monetary regulation conditions in one country is not an isolated event, it has already happened in other parts of the world, Nigeria is a case that I remember right now and I believe that something similar has also happened in Venezuela.

Without going any further, in my country, the average value of BTC for sale is higher than the average of the main exchanges in the world and the value for purchase too, yesterday I published an article about the large spread that we must bear here if we want to buy or sell any cryptocurrency on local exchanges.

The value of a cryptocurrency should be associated with supply and demand, there may be small price differences between exchanges due to small factors that influence when determining the value, but as always, when governments intervene in the markets, the real variables leave step to others and in the case of South Korea, Kimchi stops being a healthy food to give indigestion.

El Kimchi es una comida típica coreana que se basa en un fermentado de vegetales para acompañar otros platos, en los últimos tiempos se ha puesto de moda por sus propiedades saludables como alimento probiótico, hasta ahí la definición real.

El nombre de esta comida ha sido tomado por los analistas, asesores financieros y la banca en general para definir una prima adicional que determina una diferencia en los precios de los activos criptográficos entre los exchanges de Corea del Sur y los extranjeros. En el bitcoin por ejemplo, los precios son notablemente más altos en ese país en comparación con otras naciones inclusive entre asiáticas.

Pese a que esa tasa puede variar, en estos momentos está en un 15% por lo que el bitcoin cuesta en Corea del Sur casi 70.000 dólares comparados con los 59.000 que fijan las más importantes exchanges del mundo. La prima Kimchi aumenta cuando aparece una tendencia alcista y los especuladores de ese país promueven el “miedo a quedar fuera de algo” o “Fear Of Missing Out” conocido mundialmente por su sigla FOMO.

La realidad es que la intervención del estado surcoreano para respaldar su moneda hace que haya límites estrictos y por lo tanto faltantes de liquidez, eso se traduce en esta prima adicional que como dije, puede llegar hasta un 15% del valor de la criptomoneda que se pretenda adquirir.

Quizás muchos al leer esto piensen en vender sus bitcoins en el mercado surcoreano a un valor considerablemente mayor al que conseguirían en los exchanges de otras partes del mundo, pero no les será posible porque las regulaciones determinadas por el gobierno prohíben a clientes extranjeros operar en exchanges coreanos.

Sin embargo, este valor provocado por condiciones de regulación monetaria en un país no es un hecho aislado, ya ha pasado en otras partes del mundo, Nigeria es un caso que recuerdo en estos momentos y creo que también en Venezuela ha ocurrido algo parecido.

Sin ir más lejos, en mi país el valor promedio del BTC para la venta es mayor al del promedio de los principales exchanges del mundo y el valor para compra también, en el día de ayer publiqué un artículo sobre el gran spread que debemos soportar aquí si queremos comprar o vender cualquier criptomoneda en los exchanges locales.

El valor de una criptomoneda debería estar asociado a la oferta y demanda, puede haber pequeñas diferencias de cotización entre exchanges por pequeños factores que influyen a la hora de determinar el valor, pero como siempre, cuando los gobiernos intervienen en los mercados las variables reales dejan paso a otras y en el caso de Corea del Sur el Kimchi deja de ser una comida saludable para pasar a dar indigestión.
