Lost bitcoins - Bitcoins perdidos

A few days ago the news of the death of Mircea Popescu, a controversial and disorderly character, holder of several thousand bitcoins, was known.

Popescu was known to have a large fortune in bitcoins, some analysts speculate that it could be worth about 2 billion dollars or more; his death was reported by three friends with whom he shared vacation in Playa Hermosa, Costa Rica. According to witnesses, he was carried away by the current and died on the spot.

His website, which was permanently updated, has ceased to have any movement since 06/23, the day reported as that of his death.

According to those close to him and experts, that fortune could be lost forever if no one else knows the keys to his wallets. Popescu has been a controversial character with various accusations of sexual violence, fights, and intolerance, but he was also one of the first to believe and adopt bitcoin which brought him huge sums of money.

Coincidentally a few days ago I wrote a post about the next bitcoin update which I named 709632 for the block number from which the modifications will begin to take effect, it is estimated that this block will be completed around November 14. In that writing he mentioned that one of the improvements that will be incorporated in this soft update is MAST (Merkelized Abstract Syntax Trees), this incorporation will provide the bitcoin blockchain with improved scripting functionalities, and with them, for example, it could be added intelligence to prevent cases like Popescu's. For example, incorporating a substitute or addition to the management of the accounts that could only be enabled by the contract when the holder does not operate for a predetermined period of time.

Unfortunately, Popescu passed away before that improvement and if he was not proactive, those bitcoins will be immobile and lost forever.

But as Satoshi Nakamoto himself said, the coins that are lost make those of the other holders worth more, that loss should be considered as a donation for the rest of the community.

Hace algunos días se conoció la noticia del fallecimiento de Mircea Popescu, un polémico y desordenado personaje, tenedor de varios miles de bitcoins.

Popescu fue conocido por ser poseedor de una gran fortuna en bitcoins, algunos analistas especulan que podría valer unos 2.000 millones de dólares o más; su muerte fue reportada por tres amigas con las que compartía unas vacaciones en Playa Hermosa, Costa Rica. Según las testigos fue arrastrado por la corriente y falleció en el acto.

Su sitio web que se mantenía permanentemente actualizado hay dejado de tener movimiento desde el 23/06, el día reportado como el de su muerte.

Según allegados y expertos, esa fortuna podría perderse para siempre si ninguna otra persona conoce las claves de sus billeteras. Popescu ha sido un personaje controversial con varias acusaciones por violencia sexual, peleas e intolerancia, pero también fue uno de los primeros en creer y adoptar el bitcoin lo que le reportó enormes sumas de dinero.

Casualmente unos días atrás escribí una publicación sobre la próxima actualización de bitcoin al que denominé 709632 por el número de bloque desde el que comenzarán a regir las modificaciones, se calcula que ese bloque se completará alrededor del próximo 14 de noviembre. En ese escrito mencionaba que una de las mejoras que se incorporarán en esa actualización blanda es MAST (Merkelized Abstract Syntax Trees), esa incorporación dotará a la cadena de bloques de bitcoin de funcionalidades mejoradas de scripting y con ellas se podría, por ejemplo, agregar inteligencia para prevenir casos como el de Popescu. Por ejemplo, incorporar un sustituto o agregado al manejo de las cuentas que solo podría ser habilitado por el contrato cuando el titular no opere por un lapso de tiempo predeterminado.

Lamentablemente Popescu falleció antes de esa mejora y si no fue previsor esos bitcoins quedarán inmóviles y perdidos para siempre.

Pero como dijo el propio Satoshi Nakamoto, las monedas que se pierden hacen que las de los demás tenedores valgan más, habría que considerar esa pérdida como un donativo para el resto de la comunidad.
