I am finding my self getting more and more hooked on collecting silver, gold and other precious metals since the start of this series a couple weeks ago. And since I am a big cheapo, I am trying to score as much as I can for free.

And today's exhibit is exactly that. A silver coin I got totally for free, 4 days ago. In case you don't know, silver coins are probably the easiest type of precious metals you can get for free. All you have to do is just ask around friends and family for old collections or whatever, and often you will score a few silver ones! Or take a good look at the change you receive. Depending on what country you are from, the chance of getting an old silver coin still in circulation may be quite high! Just do some research on your country's coin history ;)

Anyways. Yesterday I took a look at an old jar my father used to collect foreign coins. Most of them are totally junk, but there it was. Standing proud, a sexy German Imperial Eagle made of silver. A 5 Deutsche Mark minted in 1969. A fine addition for my treasury!

These coins are quite common, with millions and millions of them printed back in the 60s. They are  11.2 g heavy, composed of  .625  silver.

As mentioned before, one side features the Imperial Eagle while the other reads"BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND DEUTSCHE MARK" which translates to  Federal Republic of Germany Deutsche Mark. The ring inscription reads "EINIGKEIT UND RECHT UND FREIHEIT" which translates to "Unity and Justice and Freedom"

These coins have a respectful diameter of  29 mm. Just click here if you want to learn all the technical details about them.

Here's a photo for size comparison with a 1 Euro coin:

Hope you enjoyed the read. Coming up in the next post...a really interesting foreign coin I have for some years now. It's neither silver. Or gold. Or made from any other precious metals! And has almost zero collectable value! Yet, it has a whopping value of 50 Euros! Stay tuned ;)

Till then, enjoy some more photos:

Photo's by me, not free for reuse. Please contact me first. Or just be an asshole and steal them anyways.
