Can Bitcoin Really Be Worth $100,000?

Yes.

Oh you wanted a longer answer to that. Although it will be a long climb to get to that number and the odds of it happening are slim it is a possibility based on a couple of factors. There is also the possibility it goes to zero or hangs at 10k for a long long time. This post is not to shill Bitcoin or to encourage anyone to invest just to look at some factors as to what could push the coin above 100,000 dollars. And as always cryptocurrency investing is really high risk so please only buy crytpo with money you can afford to lose.

But first let's do some math.

If one Bitcoin is worth $100,000 then that would make the market cap roughly 2 trillion dollars. And I mean really roughly as I'm doing quick math and just adding a zero with a 10x gain. That is a lot of money but it's not as much as you think.

The Gold Argument

Did you know that gold is currently sitting at a market cap of 9 trillion dollars. That is 4 and a half times the market cap of a $100,00 Bitcoin. That means we can easily break $100,000 and still have room to grow. The reason that people use this argument is that bitcoin is compared to gold often. It is an asset that is a hedge when shit happens. You can argue it's better as it is cheaper and more scarce or worse as it isn't a real world item with use. Either way a lot of people are accepting that bitcoin is digital gold and if the price follows than 100k is a possibility.

The Inflation Argument

Bitcoin will never have more than 21 million units. But no matter what country you are in money will continue to be printed. This means your dollar will lose purchasing power constantly and if the price of bitcoin stays the same than at some point when the value of fiat goes down it will be worth $100,000 USD in the country you are using it.

There is validity in both of these arguments and they can lead us to a 100k bitcoin some time in the future. I don't know if it will happen or how long it will take but it is not crazy if it happens. Time will tell but I wouldn't be shocked if the day came.
