frens, we have yet another major social media platform testing NFT profile pictures. The "front page of the internet" itself, Reddit is taking the stage this time.

Reddit NFT Avatars

Following Twitter's launch of verified NFT avatars on Twitter Blue, Reddit is now testing their own version of this. Reddit is not new to the NFT world as they released their own NFT avatars called CryptoSnoo's last year. These will of course be supported because not only are they their own NFTs, but they're on Ethereum. The NFT avatars for Reddit will be similar to Twitter's in that they are all Ethereum based but how they will do it is to be determined. This feature is in the very early stages of testing, probably inspired by Twitter, but that's just my guess. Kinda surprising thought since the Twitter announcement got so much hate from so many people. When you try to introduce normies to NFTs that have never heard of them in a fashion where the only use-case is your profile picture, you're going to get some mixed reactions. Mostly hate. Just like when Ghost Recon did NFTs.

Above is a screenshot from Reddit's test NFTs probably for this feature specifically. Maybe they're a sneak peak at newer versions of the CryptoSnoo's. We don't really have a lot of details, this is just what developer Nima Owji dug up from Reddit's code. Reddit has had cryptocurrency integrated into a few of its communities (subreddits) for quite some time now in the form of community points. These community points have been available in the Cryptocurrency subreddit as Moons and the Fortnite subreddit as Bricks. Both of which were initially issued on Ethereum's Rinkeby testnet. Due to insane gas fees for transactions, Reddit deployed on layer 2 solution Arbitrum on the Rinkeby testnet and has yet to migrate these tokens to the mainnet. Why they chose Ethereum over WAX or Harmony to issues community points is beyond me... But I assume it's because Ethereum has been around longer. Why not let users buy the new CryptoSnoo's on layer 2? Why not let users pay for NFT avatars with their tokens earned from community points? I guess we'll have to wait and see if this ever hits the actually Reddit frontend.

What do you think about Reddit doing NFT avatars?

Thanks for reading! Much love.
